THE LATEST is 2 years old, the 10 best SaaS marketing tools and platforms, everything you need to know about HubSpot workflows, and how They Ask, You Answer can fail even with all the right pieces ...this is THE LATEST!

๐ŸŽ‰ Hot off the presses

๐ŸŽ‰ Tickets for HubSpot Training Day are now $99. But, if you use my code LIZHASFRIENDS you'll get yours for $49! Whether you're a digital marketercontent managersales pro, or business leader, there's something for you at HubSpot Training Day ...even if you don't use HubSpot!

I'm back home from vacation and, holy cannoli, do I have something crazy to show y'all:

Screen Shot 2020-09-24 at 8.39.00 PM

"Uh, what the heck is that, Liz?"

Well, that uninspired piece of introductory fluff right there is how I opened my very first edition of THE LATEST with me as the author back in 2018 โ€” a milestone I thought would be fun to share today considering this little email newsletter just turned two years old

It's funny, I never wanted to be a part of this.

Before THE LATEST, I was happiest hiding under my headphones, cranking up my beloved Pitbull and swearing it was something inspiring like Paganini (although, to be fair, I can also get down with some Paganini), and writing blog articles and content pillars.

Creating content was safe. I could edit everything until it was *chef's kiss* perfect.

Email newsletters, on the other hand, which go out to tens of thousands of people that I couldn't take back or revise later? Hard pass. I would have rather managed an IRS audit for a drunk hedgehog who moonlights as a private detective, with only a shoebox filled with 896 crumpled receipts from 1972 to 2003 to work off of.

So, two years ago, when Kathleen Booth (our then-VP of marketing) asked me if I'd like to try my hand at writing for THE LATEST, I laughed and said "no" without hesitation.

To which she replied:

"Oh, let me rephrase that. You are going to try your hand at writing THE LATEST. You don't actually have a choice."

It took me awhile to open up and stop playing it so safe. Of course, now some might say I take the human approach to email newsletter-writing a little too far. But I stand by the memories we've shared together, both ridiculous and hyper-personal:

With THE LATEST, we sought to create something magical for all of you out there โ€” a newsletter so valuable that you could do your jobs better, grow in your careers, and make smarter decisions faster.

Over the past two years, however, I've learned what an unexpected gift this newsletter has also been for me, for utterly selfish reasons.

I've found a confidence and a voice here that I didn't know I possessed. And during periods where I've felt tremendous loneliness or fear in the face of life-altering experiences and decisions, your replies and personal stories were bright sparks that pushed me to take risks.

So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

๐ŸŽ‰ "There are thousands of SaaS marketing tools and platforms... which are the best?" (7-minute read)

Now, if youโ€™ve been keeping track, the MarTech landscape has increased to around 8,000 solutions. In other words, it may take you a little while to filter out the noise and find the best of the best tools. And to make it more complicated, some tools are incredibly niche and some are largely encompassing. So, finding the ideal tools for your business may take some fine-tuning. Thankfully, IMPACT Director of Digital Product Morgan VanDerLeest is a glutton for punishment โ€” and he sifted through all of that crazy to bring you his hand-curated list of the 10 best SaaS marketing tools and platforms.

๐ŸŽ‰ You asked, we answered

๐ŸŽ‰ "What do we need to know to maximize our use of HubSpot workflows? Can it be used for more than email nurturing?"
(14-minute read)

If youโ€™re a HubSpot user, marketing automation is synonymous with HubSpot workflows. Many HubSpot users assume workflows are primarily used for email lead nurturing and while this is absolutely true, workflows are really the โ€œSwiss army knifeโ€ of the HubSpot tool kit โ€” they can be used in multiple applications and have (almost) endless possibilities. Lucky for you, IMPACT HubSpot trainer Jess Palmeri is here to save the day with this ridiculously comprehensive, examples-packed guide to absolutely everything you need to know about HubSpot workflows.

๐ŸŽ‰ You asked, we answered

๐ŸŽ‰ "How can companies fail with They Ask, You Answer when they believe in the principles and hire the right people for their team? How does it still go wrong?" (10-minute read)

In whatโ€™s become one of the most iconic movie scenes of all time, after 15 rounds in the ring with Apollo Creed and numerous broken bones โ€” Rocky loses! It just goes to show that sometimes you can put your heart and soul into something, do everything you were supposed to and it still doesnโ€™t work out. The same holds true for companies implementing a They Ask, You Answer approach to their digital sales and marketing. They read the book or see Marcus speak, they catch the vision, they hire the right people... and then it still doesn't work for them. Why? Well, in this candid, actionable analysis from IMPACT Digital Sales and Marketing Coach Chris Marr, get the inside scoop on the four reasons why They Ask, You Answer can still fail with the best of intentions.

Hey ๐Ÿ‘‹, Kristen here! While Liz is still off enjoying her much deserved vacation, I'm here to deliver today's THE LATEST.

Some of you may already know me, but those that don't, I'm IMPACT's Director of Demand Generation, a proud dog Mom to Katie and currently counting down the days to my pandemic wedding next month.

Yes, I said pandemic wedding. ๐Ÿ‘ฐ

We've all be dealing with our own struggles since COVID-19 took over our lives. For me, I went from being an excited bride-to-be to watching everything I had seamlessly planned for my October wedding slowly come undone over the course of a few months.

By the time July hit, it was clear that our original 275-person wedding could never happen this year.

I'm far from the only bride to have to face these tough decisions this year. Pretty much anyone with a 2020 wedding date has gone through the same emotional rollercoaster my fiance and I have.

What helped me turn things around? It may sound strange, but it was my job.

You see, events have always been a part of my career. I've had everything you can think of thrown at me, from earthquakes in Mexico to protesters storming an event and, this year, postponing Digital Sales & Marketing World due to COVID-19.

When I was sitting at home in July fretting over whether to just cancel my wedding or pivot to something new, I realized something...

My entire career had led me to this moment!

Instead of going further down an emotional rabbit hole, I tapped into work-Kristen and came up with a game plan for how to pivot this event. We made the tough decision to cut our guest list to the bare minimum, completely changed venues so we could be outside, and I hired a company to livestream the entire thing.

Once I took control of the situation, instead of getting buried by it, everything turned around and I could finally be excited for my wedding again.

If I can leave you with anything it's that these times may be tough, but it's still possible to create something great out of it!

And with that, here's THE LATEST!

Google Ads now hides data in search terms report, IMPACT+ resources to help you achieve your sales goals, and do you need a paid media agency for Black Friday and Cyber Monday ...this is THE LATEST!

As my events-wrangling counterpart Stephanie noted in the last issue, I am currently on vacation โ€” and I am having a freaking blast down south hanging with IMPACT pal Franco Valentino and his family.

In fact, today, we went off-roading in the woods, which I have never, ever done before. (I've always wanted to, though!)

Image from iOS (1)-Sep-20-2020-01-41-16-22-AM

Of course, it was a totally bouncy, ridiculously fun, rock-climbing adventure.

Image from iOS (3)-Sep-20-2020-01-41-16-60-AM

Oh, and it was a stupidly gorgeous day, to boot!

Image from iOS (2)-Sep-20-2020-01-41-15-96-AM

But the best part is that none of our phones had any service for the three or four hours we were there.

Not even a single solitary network blip strong enough to post a mouthy tweet, gratuitous cat photo, or unpopular food opinion. (For instance, all Twizzlers are gross. I will never be convinced otherwise. Wanna fight about it?)

After months and months of late nights, early mornings, and always being "on" in some form or another, it was the most unexpected and perfect little gift this vacation has given me.

It was a blissful reminder that, even when we physically leave our computers and our work lives behind for a little while, that's not always enough. Sometimes, what we really need is to go into the woods, fill our lungs with as much fresh air as possible, climb a few rocks, and stop trying to control and know everything around you.

Sometimes, you just need to surrender.

Anyway, here's THE LATEST!

๐Ÿ‘‰ "Is it really that big of a deal that some of the data in the search terms report is now being hidden by Google Ads?" (2-minute read)

Google Ads has quietly started removing data from the search terms report. Although this may not sound like a huge deal for digital marketers to take note of, it has the potential to wreak havoc for companies doing paid ads for reporting of clicks, return on ad spend (ROAS), and more. The update was released via a notification in your Ads account, that can easily go unnoticed. In this down and dirty article from IMPACT VP of Marketing Vin Gaeta, get the inside scoop on this news on Google Ads reporting and what you need to do about it.

Curious when e-commerce businesses start thinking about Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Hereโ€™s the truth: They never stop thinking about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The campaigns that gird these lucrative days are planned in the summer โ€” and the aftermath lasts long after the end of November. INBOUND 2020 sessions you should attend, a comprehensive B2B marketing plan template, and a custom HubSpot Training Day agenda for business leaders ...this is THE LATEST!

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot off the presses

๐Ÿ˜ฏTickets for HubSpot Training Day are now $99... unless you use my discount code "LATEST" for 50% off! Whether you're a digital marketer, content manager, sales pro, or business leader, there's something for you at HubSpot Training Day ...even if you don't use HubSpot!

Hey everyone, I'm back! It's Stephanie ๐Ÿ‘‹ here with your Thursday issue of THE LATEST

Next week is the annual INBOUND event which, of course, is virtual this year. This is my 8th year attending INBOUND and this year I was asked to be on the advisory committee to help craft the attendee experience.

The committee was responsible for a few things including creating recommended meetup agendas, determining what questions would be included in the virtual attendee profiles, and more. Recently, they asked us to share what INBOUND means to us

what does inbound mean to meCheck out the video.

I was asked to go first and what immediately came to my mind was how INBOUND has transformed me throughout the years just as INBOUND itself has transformed as an event. What started out as simply inbound marketing became this massive movement for business and personal growth. But this took years to accomplish.

Transformation is never easy.

The way the world has transformed as a result of the pandemic has been challenging for everyone in different ways. My entire job has transformed with the current inability to hold in-person events. And now, INBOUND itself has transformed from an in-person experience to a virtual one.

But transformation is vital to survival.

Today, INBOUND officially opened up the virtual event venue to attendees to start exploring and building our agendas and it looks pretty incredible. Seeing this was the first time that I felt that little spark of excitement that I always get leading up to INBOUND. Seeing the familiar lawn on D and the big INBOUND sign (pictured below), it felt kind of like the real thing. Right before my eyes, I saw the world of virtual events being transformed.

I have attended many virtual events in the past few months and they all looked the same. There was an agenda with a list of sessions, a chat panel, and sometimes an attendee list. This was the first time I saw an event try to recreate the in-person experience in a way that actually added to the event experience.

inbound2020

While transformation can be really difficult, it can also yield amazing things. I won't give you the old caterpillar/butterfly cliche, but it's really true. Whether you're working to transform your content strategy, your sales process, your entire business, or even your career, keep going! You've got this.

Anyway, here's THE LATEST

๐Ÿ‘‰ "What INBOUND 2020 sessions should I attend to set myself up for success in 2021?" (5-minute read)

As usual, IMPACT Editorial Director Liz Moorehead has you covered with this free B2B marketing plan template plus tips and best practices for using it.

One of the most critical components of guaranteeing that your video content is polished, professional, and pristine is having the right video equipment at your fingertips.

However, as I was getting ready for another afternoon of filming at IMPACT HQ today, I realized something. Fresh lighting, rockstar-level cameras, and a dapper little clapperboard โ€” yes, that's its real name โ€” are absolutely essential:

I always feel so official with this setup. I'll be in my trailer. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

But the true, unsung equipment hero of the video marketing world (in my eyes, at least) is Zoom. Yes, that Zoom, the video conferencing solution many of us spend our days in, politely "advising" coworkers and clients alike that they're on mute.

Screen Shot 2020-09-15 at 4.03.47 PM

Because, when I'm getting camera-ready, Zoom is always there for me as the virtual mirror I need... to straighten my hair and do my makeup... because the bathroom is super far away, and...

๐Ÿ‘‹ Yo, tickets are now on sale for HubSpot Training Day on October 27! But they'll only be $39 for tickets until September 15... then it'll be $99. HubSpot can transform your business, if your whole team knows how to get the most from your investment. Get your ticket today! (Psst! You don't need to have HubSpot to attend! It's also an ideal fit for companies that are still considering HubSpot for their company.)

Ask anyone I've coached on creating content, the #1 question I ask whenever someone slides a blog article draft across my virtual desk is, "Could anyone else have written this but you?" If the answer is yes, then that poor soul needs to go back to the drawing board to put more of themselves and their personality into their piece.

Why? Well, as I like to say, "They're asking and you're answering, but how will you make sure they remember it was you who gave them the answer?"

I'll show you what I mean.

Most recently, a friend wounded me on an emotional and spiritual level when he "joked" that Godfather III was the best of the trilogy. (I mean, really, the helicopter massacre scene alone makes my insides hurt.)

Being the totally calm and rational human that I am, I immediately shot back with accusations of him being a blasphemer of the highest order. I'm sorry, but a girl's gotta have her standards.

He replied the next day with an apology and his real answer to the question of how he would rank all of the Godfather movies:

image-3

I love how he put himself in it as a little professor, and also the way the Part III bar is crumpled at the bottom. Ha!

He's a super talented artist, and this was his way of answering a question in a way that was totally expressive of who he is as a person. It also fully restored my faith in his morals, convictions, and strength of character, thus allowing our friendship to remain in tact. (Seriously, Part III is a three-hour hot mess express, that cannot be overstated.)

Remember, the more you put of yourself into the answers you give in your content โ€” through personal stories, conversational tone, and maybe even the rogue doodle now and then โ€” you won't just educate your audience. You'll also help them get to know who you are as a person, which builds trust and makes you completely unforgettable.

That's an unstoppable combination in the content marketing world.

And now, here's THE LATEST!

In the last decade, MarketingSherpa research has found that B2B marketing lists tend to decay at a rate of 2.1% per month. This is an annualized rate of 22.5%. Holy depreciation, Batman. So, itโ€™s best not to let them linger. In fact, a re-engagement email may be just what you need. In this article from IMPACT Managing Editor Ramona Sukhraj, check out the 15 best re-engagement emails from brands from all industries that you'll totally want to steal for your own company

How to use Trello to run your content strategy, the consequences of not creating your content in-house, and HubSpot Training Day custom agenda for marketers ...this is THE LATEST!

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot off the presses

๐Ÿš€  Tickets are now on sale for HubSpot Training Day on October 27! Ticket prices go up from $39 to $99 on September 15, so don't wait. HubSpot can transform your business, if your whole team knows how to get the most from your investment. Get your ticket today! (Psst! You don't need to have HubSpot to attend! It's also an ideal fit for companies that are still considering HubSpot for their company.)

The content strategy I develop and execute for IMPACT has loads and loads of comparison content. (I mean, duh, it's one of The Big 5 blog topics, right?)

It is in that spirit that I present the following comparison to you:

Michael Shannon is Bill Hader's mean older brother.

Seriously, I can easily imagine Bill at a dinner table saying (without making eye contact), "You know, Michael... Michael's actually really sweet once you get to know him. Don't let that tough exterior fool you..."

All the while, you can hear Michael in the kitchen, slamming cabinets and swearing at a small child about the importance of salting your water when you make pasta, before smashing a chafing dish, saying he can't work under these conditions.

You can try to change my mind about this comparison, but you'll fail.

๐Ÿ‘‰ "How do you use Trello to run a content strategy, and what examples or tips can you share?" (13-minute read)

Trello is an incredibly simple, yet powerful tool for any company. You can use it for tracking personal tasks, collaborating on complex projects, running a marketing campaign with lots of moving pieces, and more. But one of the best ways you can use it is for your content strategy. In fact, I use Trello (without any paid add-ons) to run IMPACT's educational, revenue, and video content strategies, and I would recommend the same to anyone. Which is why I wrote this comprehensive, example-filled, tips-laden overview of how to use Trello to run your company's content strategy โ€” trust me, this will rock your content world.

๐Ÿ‘‰ "Why can't we outsource our content creation to an agency? What are the consequences, really?" (5-minute read)

Thousands of companies around the world are doing what you and I call "content," "inbound," or "blogging," but let's be frank: The majority are frustrated. Most don't get great results. And many are tired of waiting to see the benefits of their work. If you fall in this category, it likely comes down to one thing: content ownership โ€” or a lack thereof. And, in this hold-no-punches article from They Ask, You Answer author Marcus Sheridan, you will get the cold, hard truth about why creating your own content in-house is absolutely critical to your success with content marketing.

Conceived as the super tactical, ridiculously actionable marketing event we've been dreaming of, HubSpot Training Day will have some of your favorite HubSpot speakers, academy professors, and product owners, teaching and sharing their expertise. With so many sessions, however, it can be challenging (and time consuming) to figure out exactly where you should spend your time. Well, stress less, because IMPACT Director of Community and Events Stephanie Baiocchi is here with her custom agenda for digital marketers just like you who want to attend HubSpot Training Day on October 27.
