Happy Thursday, everybody! According to "Bertha," a barista at my local Starbucks, it's the spookiest day of the year... πŸ’€

shareImage-1572528008

Now, as some of you may recall, I'm not a huge fan of dressing up for Halloween. But I'm making an exception this year:

shareImage-1572527888

Today, I'm dressing up as a Washington Nationals fan who is completely exhausted and woefully under-caffeinated, BECAUSE WE WON THE WORLD SERIES LAST NIGHT, AND I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS!

Ahem.

You'll have to forgive me. As a Washington, D.C., native, my grandfather's old Washington Senators scorecards are one of my most prized possessions. I also remember when Ryan Zimmerman was our first-ever draft pick, after the team moved from Montreal before the 2005 season.

That said, if you had told me after our not-so-hot 19-31 start this season that we would end October as World Series champions, I would have thought you were out of your mind.

But our ridiculously lovable team β€” with an absurdly catchy child's bop as our unofficial anthem β€” pulled off the impossible in a World Series for the ages. Where neither team won at home, and it all came down to a nail-biting game seven in Houston.

As someone who recently turned 37 years old (and increased the font size on her phone yesterday), one of my favorite tidbits about our recently-anointed World Series champs is that we have the oldest team in Major League Baseball.

That's right, fellow kids. Ancient fossils we may be, but folks in their mid-to-late 30s and early 40s can still get stuff done.

So, in honor of the Washington Nationals officially being the best at baseball for right now, I'm dedicating this issue of THE LATEST to content that only features the best β€” the best insights, best tips, and best examples β€” so you can be the best at what you do.

Content marketing doesn't take a year to work, Facebook News a disruptor for marketers, and the best content marketing agencies for 2020 ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the good stuff!

πŸ”₯ You website can't only look good β€” it needs to deliver results. Invest in a website that will generate leads and drive the sales your business needs with the IMPACT Website Blueprint.

I. Love. Movies.❀️

In fact, one of my favorite games to play with fellow cinema nerds is to recast famous movies and then get in heated debates into all hours of the morning about our choices.

For example, I love Jeff Goldbloom in Jurassic Park β€” one of the greatest movies ever made β€” but I think a younger Bruce Campbell could have turned out an interesting take on Dr. Ian Malcolm...

bruce-campbell

via GIPHY

However, as much I love the actors and actresses that bring iconic motion picture stories to life, I absolutely hate celebrity interviews. Particularly those of the late-night talk show variety.

With very exceptions β€” for instance, Bill Hader and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (my tall brunette writer role model) β€” celebrities that wow me on the big screen tend to disappointment me once they are forced to operate as a human without a script to prop them up.

That sounds very rude, I know.

Generally speaking, I try not to be judgmental of those I haven't actually met in real life. But that doesn't change the fact that there have been too many moments where someone riveted me with a show-stopping performance for the ages, only to break my heart once I realized they were only as interesting (and smart) as the writers behind them.

Again, I know that's terrible of me. But no one likes that level of bait and switch, where the contents of a book don't live up to its cover... so to speak.

To put this in a different context, think about company websites that look breathtakingly stunning and cutting edge on the surface, but don't have much else going on for them. You realize within a few scrolls and clicks that you can't find anything you're looking for, the content is flimsy (at best), and the organization of what is there is utterly confusing.

Like they always say on the Great British Bake Off, "You can't win with style over substance."

The same holds true with websites. It doesn't matter how pretty your website is. If the underlying website strategy is busted, it's always going to end up being a disappointment.

Facebook is launching Facebook News, which will give users β€œmore control over the stories they see, and the ability to explore a wider range of their news interests, directly within the Facebook app.” With the focus being on the individual user, Facebook News is looking to change the way news is distributed and consumed. In this article from IMPACT Content Marketing Consultant Connor DeLaney, learn what this new product announcement means for publishers and marketers, given Facebook's past issues with content recommendations.

😈 The greatest trick the devil ever played was convincing everyone it takes a year for content marketing to work (2:30-minute video)

When we talk to business leaders and digital marketers about content marketing as a path to achieve their most aggressive marketing and sales goals, one concern comes up more than any other β€” "Content marketing sounds great in theory, but doesn't it take at least a year for it to actually start working? That's what we keep hearing from other agencies." The answer is no. It doesn't.

Today is my birthday, y'all! πŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

What's funny about having a birthday close to Halloween is that people assume I love spooky season, costumes, and all of the All Hallow's Eve goodness I can stand.

That could not be further than the truth.

Particularly the costume part, since every birthday party I had growing up was a Halloween party... and my mother was not a half measures kind of gal.

Screen Shot 2019-10-26 at 10.49.14 AM

For this get-up, my hair alone took 45 minutes. πŸ˜³

Don't get me wrong, I'm not ungrateful for what my mom did at all. (Elaborate handmade costumes and intricate hairstyles with thousands of bobby-pins notwithstanding, my childhood birthday parties were a ton of fun!) But let's just say I got my fill of going overboard on Halloween out of my system at a very early age.

So, in honor of my birthday this year, I'm going to ignore all of the Halloween madness going on around me and focus this entire issue of THE LATEST on one of my absolute favorite things in the whole wild world.

What to do when your website gets hacked, how ignoring SEO basics can kill your website traffic by 94%, and Facebook's new 'Suggested Time' feature ...this is THE LATEST!

I'm a word nerd, but I'm also a data junkie. (This may surprise some of you who have watched me grimace and groan while trying to calculate the tip on a meal β€” like a third grader trying to spell "Wednesday" without having to say "WED-NES-DAY" out loud.)

I say this because, back in May, I shared some initial data from our Digital Sales and Marketing Scorecard, which allows companies to measure (for free) how their strategies and efforts stack up against those of companies who are seeing the most success with inbound.

digital-marketing-strategy-scorecard

Five months later, I found myself a little curious to see if the trends we had seen initially continued, or if the landscape changed.

To recap, close to 100 companies had submitted their Digital Sales and Marketing Scorecard when I pulled those numbers back in May β€” including Brian Halligan from HubSpot! β€” and here were the results:

No organization received a perfect score.

Only 5.2% scored between 81 and 99.

Only 10.5% scored between 61 and 80.

Then 33.6% scored between 41 and 60...

...and 33.6% (again) scored between 21 and 40

Finally, 16.8% scored between 0 and 20

Now, here is where we stand today β€” with well over 500 companies having completed the scorecard:

STILL no organization has received a perfect score.

Only 2% scored between 81 and 99.

Only 8.1% scored between 61 and 80.

Then 23.5% scored between 41 and 60...

...and a whopping 47.8% scored between 21 and 40

Finally, 21.3% scored between 0 and 20

I say this with no judgment or finger-wagging, but I was surprised to see that a much larger percentage of companies scored between zero and 40 than before.

Obviously, this data indicates that a lot of us are still struggling to achieve the results we want out of our efforts, but why? I mean, we go out of our way to hire the right talent, create the best digital marketing strategies, and so forth. Is it a lack of buy-in from leadership and sales? Is it that many of us are still overly reliant on outsourced writers? Is it something else?

We've created Inbound Success Playbooks to help companies overcome those (and other) challenges. But these numbers lead me to believe that, even though we're so quick to point out our differences to each other (industry, company size, budget, team structure, etc.), we actually have more in common than we think.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

πŸ’€ Here are the exact steps to follow if your business website ever gets hacked (8-minute read)

Demand gen vs. lead gen, the psychology of pink, and Facebook's 2019 Holiday Marketing Guide is out ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the good stuff!

πŸ’₯ The #1 reason why digital marketing strategies fail is due to lack of buy-in from sales and leadership. In 45 minutes, learn how you can get sales and leadership buy-in for your content strategy from Marcus Sheridan and Melanie Collins from IMPACT on October 23.

I make no secret of the fact that orange is my absolute favorite color...

IMG-9012

Isn't she beautiful? Her name is Foxy, and she's the closest I'll ever get to "wearing" orange, since I tend to look like a Medieval plague victim in orange hues, given my fair complexion.

I do not, however, pay the color pink the same courtesy. Even though, privately, I absolutely love pink. Yes, my body rejects outfits that don't fall strictly within the color boundaries of black, gray, mauve, tan, and classic plaids. But that doesn't change the fact that pink quite literally sparks joy in my otherwise monochrome world.

In fact, I almost always have a small vase of pink carnations on my desk:

Screen Shot 2019-10-22 at 9.58.47 AM

Much like the color pink, I also consider carnations to be unfairly maligned. Some consider them to be pedestrian, but they last forever and, when bunched together, they look like a bright, cheery burst of ruffles.

I don't usually uncover this fiercely girly side of my personality β€” the one that loves bursts of hot pink to a degree that is somewhat excessive. Because, somewhere along the line, pink became a polarizing force. Much like pumpkin beers, pink is often met with scorn and derision. (Pumpkin beers are like the Oxford comma of the beer world.)

So, today, I'm declaring my love for pink. You may dislike it, and that's totally OK. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

Plus, I think there's enough negativity in the world that maybe we should all be a little less quick to drop the judgment axe on those around us when they find pure happiness in the little things in life.

Whether that be pink, pumpkin beer, or something else.

πŸ”₯ Yes, there is a critical difference between demand generation and lead generation, and you need to know what it is (4-minute read)

If you're a digital marketer, it's likely you've heard the terms β€œdemand generation” and β€œlead generation” thrown around. It's gotten to the point where some are quick to say there is no difference between the two terms. Someone will ask, "What is demand generation?" And someone else will be quick to reply, "Nothing new! We're just rebranding lead generation with a shiny new term." But that's not an accurate assessment. In this critical read from IMPACT Director of Demand Generation Kristen Harold, learn the difference between demand generation and lead generation, and how to know which strategy is right for your company's goals.

This is the International Space Station...

The ISS is so fast, it completes a single orbit of the Earth in 90 minutes. (Your move, Eliud Kipchoge.)

Now, here is the song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers...

Screen Shot 2019-10-19 at 9.24.42 AM

Although the "500" miles is in the title of the song, it actually features a man boasting of walking a total of 1,000 miles to reach his love.

"But I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more. Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door."

What do these two things have to do with each other?

I'm glad you asked.

I was today-years-old when I learned that if you were to listen to this song aboard the ISS, traveling at its average speed of 7.66 km/s, you would travel almost exactly 1,000 miles (like the guy in the song) by the time the song finished.

Of course, this has nothing to do with digital sales and marketing. But it's Saturday and I'm still mentally unpacking myself from an amazing week at MarketingProfs B2B Forum (more on that next week), so this is what you're getting for right now.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

πŸ€” Do you need a new website or a new content strategy? (6-minute read)

So, despite all of your efforts, you're not getting the digital sales and marketing results you were hoping for. All too often, we have clients come to us with this exact problem. They've been their pouring energy into building out the perfect lead-generating website but they still can't seem to increase traffic, leads, and sales. Usually, they end up thinking their website is to blame. But that's not always the case. In this article from IMPACT Director of Website Strategy and Design Stacy Willis, learn how to answer the age old question of whether you need a new website or a new content strategy to get better results.

What's surprising, however, is how many people are scared to do so. Now, without further ado, here is the triumphant return of Content Lab, wherein you can learn how to make utterly human (and totally profitable) content.

Instead, they're pushing YouTube advertisers toward their own Ads Data Hub. According to Google, "With the migration from pixels to Ads Data Hub, our third-party measurement partners will be able to provide YouTube advertisers with more comprehensive reporting and measurement, using technology that’s built to enhance user privacy." In this article from IMPACT Director of Inbound and Content Services Justine Timoteo, get the full scoop on why Google says third-party pixel tracking is out, but their Ads Data Hub will be way better for advertisers in the long run.

Inbound marketing strategies that don't work anymore, 23 on-camera tips for video marketers, and 5 qualities every digital marketing manager should possess ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the Good Stuff!

πŸ‘‰We talk a lot about They Ask, You Answer. But what is They Ask, You Answer? How does it work and what kind of results are businesses seeing with it? Learn the answers to those questions and more in this five-minute They Ask, You Answer primer.

Learning the cost of home repairs and renovations has probably been one of the most demoralizing aspects of becoming a first-time homeowner in 2019.

IMG-2909

"Hi, I'm Liz's house, and for Halloween I'm dressing up as a money pit."

Thankfully, a dear friend of mine taught me a little trick to make the massive home improvement price tags a little easier to swallow.

Since home projects can easily skyrocket into the thousands-of-dollars range, she shared that she and her husband talk about the cost in what they call "house units," wherein a single house unit equals $1,000.

"Somehow, it dulls the sting. I don't know why. It just sounds better."

And she was totally right. For example, earlier this year, the entire backyard fence needed to be ripped out and replaced, and it cost six house units. I don't get it, but it just feels better to say that rather than, "Yeah, it cost me $6,000 to replace the backyard fence," while laughing and crying hysterically at the same time.

But you know what really annoyed the pants off of me? How hard it was to find pricing information when I was researching the fencing project.

Why do some companies still not put their pricing β€” or at least some pricing guides for planning purposes β€” on their website?

In the case of my fence replacement, I knew I was going to be spending a lot of money, so it's not like a big price tag was going to scare me off. In fact, I felt less secure about the project and put it off for a long time, because I initially couldn't find any local companies that provided any sort of insight into how much I should be budgeting.

After more research, I finally found a company that did list their pricing, and I thanked them for that courtesy by giving them my business.

I know that, for many, talking about pricing "simply isn't done," but I'm sharing my experience to prove an important point.

It doesn't matter of you're B2B or B2C, you've got to talk about pricing on your website. In detail. I know it's not always easy. I know that sometimes pricing is a complex subject, but you can still talk candidly about average costs and what factors drive cost up and down. And if you do scare someone off, they probably weren't a good fit anyway.

Your potential buyers desperately want you to be up-front about pricing. They don't want to call for a quote, and they certainly don't want to talk to a human being before they're ready to, to get an answer. Instead, they'll keep looking around until someone gives them an answer, just like I did.

So, here's your homework for today β€” read this article on how to write a pricing and cost blog post, and then get to work. Otherwise, you risk your competitors winning business that could have been yours.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

A foolproof digital marketing strategy, how Yale Appliance became the most trafficked small appliance website in the world, and Facebook settles for $40 million in video metrics lawsuit ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the Good Stuff!

✨ We're always throwing down other organizations' websites but this time it's your turn. We gave our website a facelift. You should check it out and give us your honest feedback!

Happy Tuesday, I'm back, welcome to the new week, blah blah blah... let's get down to business.

As I was cuddled on the couch putting the finishing touches on my epic digital marketing strategy article last night (because I'm physically incapable of not working), something miraculous happened:

IMG-3119-1

With an astonishing 8-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, my beloved Washington Nationals are now potentially only one game away from going to the World Series for the first time ever in the history of the franchise.

Did you know there hasn't been a World Series in Washington, D.C., since my grandfather, Vito Perruso, cheered on the Senators in 1933?

Of course, we lost that World Series, per local tradition.

In fact, as a beleaguered Washington, D.C., sports fan, my life has been almost exclusively headlined by misery, loss, and shame. (Did you see the Redskins-Dolphins game this past Sunday? No one really won that game.)

While we still have a chance to totally blow our chances at an NLCS sweep tonight, I'm leaning into the excitement, because this is a surprising change of pace. Is this what happiness feels like? I'm so confused.

For now, let's all cross our fingers that this upcoming Thursday's issue of THE LATEST isn't dedicated to cringe-y poetry, with hackneyed lines like, "My broken baseball-loving heart is now as cold and black as the night sky."

πŸ”₯ How to create a foolproof digital marketing strategy in 2020 (includes examples, step-by-step overviews, and more)

I wrote this last night because I'm so sick and tired of articles that promise they'll teach you how to create a robust, results-driving digital strategy only to deliver flimsy, one-to-many templates and a few "duh" best practices. This 3,600+ grand opus delivers everything β€” how to get buy-in from sales and leadership, what exact topics should be in your content strategy, the specific marketing and sales videos you need to be creating, how to create excitement for your strategy within your company, and a lot more. Beware, this guide is not for the faint of heart β€” but the results you'll see from this digital battle-tested marketing strategy playbook are going to be worth the effort.

Today is that special day once a month where I, Stephanie Baiocchi, get to take over THE LATEST!

I am writing to you from roughly 30,000 feet in the air (or something, I dunno, I had to Google that) on my flight from Chicago to Minnesota to visit a friend for the weekend.

I normally don't fly United but I did this time and was stoked because this meant I would finally get a Stroopwafel.

stephanie's stroopwafelMy Stroopwafel properly warming over my coffee.

Until this flight it had been ages since I'd had one because United cruelly yanked them from passenger hands (not literally of course) back in June of 2018.

Naturally, this sparked outright outrage on Twitter, including responses such as "how dare you get rid of it" and "shame on you."

Fortunately, United listened to its customers and just under six months later, the Stroopwafel made its glorious return to the skies

United, among other airlines, has dealt with its fair share of issues and frankly, PR nightmares, over the past few years. But it's nice to know the airline still takes its customers' concerns seriously. Even about something as seemingly silly as an in-flight snack.

As a customer who always has a lot to say, I appreciate when my comments and concerns are acknowledged by businesses and am more likely to be a repeat customer because of this.

When we listen to what our customers and prospects are saying, we learn more about how to be a better resource to our ideal buyers than we could ever learn from persona research or team brainstorms.

What are you doing to listen to your customers?

πŸ—£οΈ How to Build an Advocate Community For Your Business

Of course I'm going to throw my own article in here today. But it's not just for selfish reasons. People often ask to "pick my brain" about our advocate community. Big Google SEO news, 89 motivational sales quotes, and word-of-mouth in the digital age ...this is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the Good Stuff!

✨ We gave our website a facelift. You should check it out. (And let us know what you think of the video!)

Welcome to another installment of "My Apple Watch is shaming me."

Yesterday morning, while I was sipping on my second cup of coffee, my wrist vibrated. When I looked down, I saw this message:

shutup-apple-watch

I'm sorry, but I feel there should be a no-activity-shaming-before-8-a.m. rule.

By 8 a.m. on most days, the most I've exerted myself is half-heartedly chasing Nugget away from Pumpkin's breakfast, before eventually saying, "Eh, that's just natural selection in action," and going back to my cereal.

My watch's act of aggression reminds me of those supposedly "motivational" clickbait-y think pieces about the thousands of things I need to do before 7 a.m. every single day if I want to be successful.

"If you want to be a super-productive billionaire who only wears monochromatic clothing and lives in a house made entirely of glass one day, here's what you need to do:

Get up at dawn, watch the sun rise, meditate, make your own yogurt (unless it's a fasting day!), run a marathon, compose a poem about your feelings, read your work email, don't read your work email, write your daily intention on a piece of paper and then put it into a bottle and chuck it into the ocean, burn incense, spend 15 minutes decluttering (and then another 15 minutes stacking everything you own into a pyramid to harness energy of your ancestors), hunt a wombat for sport, write a chapter for a novel you'll never publish (just to get the ol' noodle going), juice 17 cantaloupes, fill out your gratitude journal, fill out your affirmations journal, fill out your goals journal, fill out your to do list with only one item, make your bed with crisp hospital corners, fold your towels into swan shapes like you live at an all-inclusive Sandals resort, make a kale and garlic smoothie, make a vision board for your day using only magazine cutouts from Food & Wine and PC Gamer, and, finally, drink a glass of lukewarm water with salt and a lime wedge.

Now, you're ready to go to work!"

Reading those articles is utterly exhausting. I mean, I get it. I'm never going to take over the world, but could the internet stop making me feel so awful about not literally curing cancer before 9 a.m.?

You know what I find motivates me for the day? Grumbling my way around my bedroom, as I change from pajamas into some sort of athleisurewear outfit β€” which is just basically a socially-acceptable pair of new, clean pajamas β€” while I listen to NPR. Also, the bowl of pumpkin spice Special K cereal I eat downstairs at my breakfast bar, while listening to CBS This Morning with Gayle King.

Oh, and this quote from Dolly Parton:

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."

...which I love so much, it's on my lock screen on my iPhone, and I shared it with y'all in this article.

I may never be a pre-dawn wombat-hunting, cantaloupe-juicing, marathon-running billionaire. But I think I'm OK with that. So, can it, Apple Watch. You can't judge me.

❌ No, your content manager (or videographer) doesn't need to have prior experience in your industry

One of the most common misconceptions business leaders have when looking to hire a content or video creator at their company is that they need to have prior relevant experience in their industry. TikTok Has a Half-Billion Users, Why Google Tag Manager Is Critical for Your Website, & Instagram Launches Reminder Tags ...This Is THE LATEST!

Last week, I had a blast as a guest on this month's IMPACT Website Throwdown:

Screen Shot 2019-09-26 at 1.02.11 PM

For those who haven't heard of the IMPACT Website Throwdown, each month fellow IMPACTers Stacy Willis and Jessie-Lee Nichols (along with a special guest) critique audience-submitted business websites during a live Facebook broadcast.

In a surprise to no one, I was brought in to provide colorful commentary about website copy.

What's funny is that the most common error I see with website copy β€” focusing your copy on how great your company and your solutions are, instead of on the problems and goals of your website visitors β€” is the symptom of a much larger problem.

From website copy to site structure, we (as businesses) have this compulsion to build websites for ourselves, not for our audience. We brag about our accomplishments, we structure site menus with our goals in mind, we use unintuitive proprietary terms, and so on.

Don't get me wrong β€” as an only child, I love, love, love to talk about myself and how great I am. So, my acute understanding of this urge to lead with your best foot forward cannot be overstated. (Although is it really bragging to say I am six feet tall, so I can reach shelves that some of my friends can't? I mean, that's just stating facts.)

Still, talking about yourself too much instead of focusing on the needs of your audience is one of the most costly mistakes you can make on your website. It's kind of like going out on a date with someone who is completely self-absorbed, so they never stop to ask you any questions. (Or, if they do, somehow your answer leads to some great story about them again.) They're probably not going to get a second date.

So, that's the thought I want to put in your noodle this weekend:

How much are you writing and building in service of your own needs, rather than the needs of your users? Be honest. It's the only way you'll break this vicious cycle.

Google-Approved Google Analytics Checklist, How to Get Started with Facebook Ads, & the Fears of Leaders ...This Is THE LATEST!

πŸ’― Jump Right into the Good Stuff!

⚠️ What is one thing I can do to make this more valuable for you? This week, I'm asking you to take two minutes to provide your feedback on THE LATEST, so I can continue to make this email newsletter as helpful as possible.

While it's not always glitz and glamor, I do love that IMPACT affords me the ability to work from home

But sometimes things go wrong.

For example, last night β€” within minutes of sending out an update to a few folks that I was (finally) going to be pushing a big project over the finish line β€” the power went out in a large part of Annapolis, Maryland, (where I live) due to an electrical fire.

blackout

And since my home office is in the basement of my house, I definitely spent the first five minutes sitting quietly in my spooky cave trying to remind myself that I'm an adult who doesn't believe in ghosts.

Then I called the power company. First, the estimate was that power would be restored by 6:15 p.m. Then 7:05 p.m. Then 1:15 a.m. I wasn't ready to give up hope, however, so I drove to a local coffee shop.

Unfortunately, their power was also out. (Clearly, I had angered some sort of internet god. It was the only explanation.)

With a sigh, I went back home and tried to make the best of it by building a fire outside and milking whatever internet juice I could out of my iPhone's personal hotspot. But given the fact that it was 94 degrees yesterday, the mosquitos were out in full force, and my Macbook only had about 25% worth of battery life, that plan fell apart quickly.

Eventually, I flopped on the couch feeling frustrated and helpless. As if it was a shortcoming on my part that I couldn't mentally will the power back on, so I could finish my work β€” a completely idiotic and irrational notion, I know.

Of course, the power eventually came back in the wee hours of the morning. And the world didn't end because I had to hit the pause button on a project.

But I learned three valuable lessons last night:

  • Although romantic notions of reading by candlelight have always consumed me, when given the choice, I'll curl up in a ball on the couch and read Twitter by candlelight instead. Apparently, this is who I am.
  • I need to be OK with the fact that I can't be in control of everything all the time, especially when it comes to work. Sometimes something will break or not go as planned. And, as Vin told me last night over the phone when I called him, "Don't kill yourself trying to make it work tonight. These things happen."
  • There is a boogeyman in my basement. You can't convince me otherwise.

And now, here's THE LATEST...

Am I defective?

While a lot of people struggle to make it through the colder months β€” only to thrive the moment the first day of spring arrives β€” I am a warm weather-loathing malcontent who "bah humbugs" my way through most of spring and summer.

Don't get me wrong, I still love camping and barbecues and swimming. But, given the choice, I'll choose cold weather over sunshine every time.

Hello. This is me. πŸ‘‹

I'm not only here for the leaf-peeping magic of autumn the internet loves to romanticize, though.

I also swoon over the cold stillness of winter days, where the bare, brittle trees stand in stark contrast against a gray sky. Some say it's a depressing time of year, because everything is dead and it's always dark. But I look at this time of year as a blank slate β€” a limitless foundation for rebirth and a time for contemplation.

I mention this because, even though the first day of fall has come and gone, today is the first day of October. And this, my friends, is the day I come alive every year.

"Spring cleaning" isn't a thing in my world. But the "fall refresh" certainly is.πŸ‚

As part of this year's refresh, I'm testing out managing my daily and weekly to do lists for IMPACT in Trello β€” and the results so far are downright life-changing.

I've also been ruthless in evaluating the gaps in our own content strategy β€” hence the first article in this issue β€” as well as how we define what "great" content is at IMPACT. On top of that, I'm taking a long, hard look at THE LATEST, to make sure it's as helpful as it can be. (That's why I'm asking for your feedback.)

So, watch out, world.

I'm a content director on a mission to do better and be better, and I'm armed with an endless supply of pumpkin-spiced coffee. It's a dangerous combination.
