Millennials vs. Email, Mobile Usability vs Mobile-First, and Old Twitter App vs. Beta... This Is THE LATEST!

Saying this was a busy week at IMPACT is a understatement.

As Liz mentioned, our entire marketing team as well as several of our supervisors were in-office in New Haven for training, meetings, and video shoots, and, as always, it was exhaustingly awesome.

IMG_3004
A happy group of IMPACTers on our last night out

The office was filled with so much life, and when I compare it to the almost too-quiet of the room I'm in now, I can't help but miss the bustle of my work family.

Fortunately, I have you, fresh-baked snickerdoodles, and these headlines to keep me company.

Life's good, am I right?

๐Ÿ“ฑGoogle Finally Clarifies the Difference Between Mobile Usability vs. Mobile-First

We all know Google loves mobile, but, for marketers, it can sometimes be difficult to make sense of what this really entails. This week, a Google insider revealed that mobile usability and mobile-first aren't necessarily interchangeable and left many scratching their heads in the process. We uncover the differences, similarities, and more in this new article.

๐Ÿ’Œ It's True -- Millennials Still Love Email! [INFOGRAPHIC]

Millennials have grown up with social media, smartphones, and technology in general, but that doesn't mean they can't appreciate a good old fashioned marketing email. A study by SendinBlue revealed 63% of millennials actually cite email as their #1 preferred channel to communicate with retailers. IMPACT Account Coordinator Lexie Ward explains why and how you can capitalize on it here.

#๏ธโƒฃ Twitter App Beta Has Four Exciting New Features in Store for Users

In their newest app beta, Twitter is hoping to avoid rubbing users the wrong way by giving roughly a thousand participants the chance to share their honest views on several new features. The beta includes color-coded conversations, algorithmically sorted replies, and even status updates. IMPACT Talent Manager Carolyn Edgecomb shares all of the details and what we can expect.

What Happens with SEO When You Change a Website Domain, You Can Put Events in Facebook Stories Now, & Why Point Pricing Is the Best... This Is THE LATEST!

There are perks to being a subscriber of THE LATEST...

Check out this Video

See what we mean?

Anyway, typically a flawless transition to the rest of THE LATEST would live here, but I'm too excited right now (for obvious reasons), so, here's what you need to know -- there are three insightful, actionable articles below you need to read. There are also a handful of expert resources and learning opportunities you need to put your peepers on.

So, without further ado....

๐Ÿšจ Here Are the SEO Implications of What Happens When You Change Domain Name (+ Real World Example)

One of the most complicated pieces of a website redesign project is SEO -- the worst case scenario being that the launch of a new website results in a nose-dive in organic traffic. Now, imagine if you're planning to switch to a new domain, or that you need to merge two or more brands under a single URL. Yikes! Learn what your domain name change plan needs to include, and see the real-world results of a brand merge we executed for David Meerman Scott's new website.

๐ŸŽ‰ Facebook Now Allows Events in Stories (Rejoice, Social Media Marketers!)

Facebook is testing a new feature that allows users to share events within stories, opening up new opportunities for event marketers. Historically, stories have not gained as much traction on Facebook as they have on other platforms like Snapchat and Instagram -- this update has the potential to change that. Here is everything you need to know about Facebook event promotion in stories -- including who is (and isn't) able to take part in the testing of this feature.

๐Ÿ˜ Point Pricing Is a Phenomenal Value-Based Pricing Model That Puts Your Customers First

If you've ever worked with a services-based business or professional -- whether that be a lawyer or a marketing agency -- you know that billable-hour pricing models are the absolute worst. We 100% agree, which is why we're huge fans of point pricing models for ourselves and other service-oriented organizations. Point pricing not only puts more focus on the value you're providing, it also puts the needs of your customer first. In this article, IMPACT Client Success Manager Dia Vavruska shares what point pricing is and how it works

What the Government Shutdown Might Mean for Site Security, HubSpot Talks Customer Advocacy, and Amazon Gives Out Free Samples... This Is THE LATEST!

Yes, it's me.

We're about halfway through the first month of 2019 and you may have noticed I've been mysteriously MIA.

I'd love to tell you that this is just me being fashionably late as is usual...

What I Want You To Believe:

But, let's be real.

Reality:

what-year-is-it-comp

Unfortunately, I found myself couch-ridden for the past week, completely out-of-the-loop, and frankly, stuck in 2018. But now that I'm back in action, the real fun can start. Let's get started with a look at a few of the newest headlines...

โค๏ธ HubSpot's New Customer Advocacy Report Reveals Big Takeaways for Marketers

Like those comfy half-priced Christmas pajamas you've been hunting for on the clearance rack (at least I have been), customer advocacy programs rarely come in one-size-fits all. That's just one of the many takeaways from HubSpot Research's new report exploring customer advocacy. The report, published last week, reveals what an effective customer advocacy campaign looks as well as why so many advocacy tactics fail. Let's dish on some of the reports biggest findings & what your team needs to know in 2019.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ The On-going U.S. Government Shutdown Raises Site Security Concerns

As of today, the U.S. is on Day 25 of a partial government shutdown and while you may think it doesn't affect your day much as a marketer, think again. The on-going rift down in Washington D.C, is now raising concerns about SSL certificates and site security overall for marketers and webmasters. IMPACT's Director of Client Service Katie Pritchard details what this could mean for you, in this article.

๐ŸŽ Amazon is Using AI to Send Users Samples Based On Their Data

I can't resist a free sample and judging by Amazon's latest strategy, they're banking on this. Going beyond traditional digital display or video advertising methods, Amazon is testing delivering product samples to customers, selected specifically based on their previous buying habits. How do they possibly make money off of that? Here's how the Targeted Product Sampling program works.

Expert Facebook Ads Tips for 2019, Our New Ultimate Guide to Video for Sales, & Real-Time Testing of Featured Snippets ...This is THE LATEST!

This is our cat, and her name is Pumpkin:

IMG-1814-1

She loves long walks on the beach, being in the way, and looking disappointed.

Yesterday, while I was in a meeting -- and I was on video, of course -- she hopped up on my desk, sat down in front of me, stared at me quizzically, and then hit me in the face when I was mid-sentence.

No claws. Just a little fuzzy smack.

She then flicked a few pens off my desk before sauntering back toward the living room.

At first, I assumed she wanted attention. But as I thought about it, I realized the more likely explanation was that she's still upset that most marketers don't think of Facebook advertising as an equitable part of their marketing strategy. And I'm not doing enough to change that.

(Pumpkin is a sophisticated feline with a lot of opinions about paid social advertising.)

๐Ÿ“Š Our Facebook Wizard Shares What You Need in Your 2019 Facebook Ads Strategy

๐Ÿ”ข Weekly Number Crunching

I am still reeling from the depth of insights found in this year's State of UX in 2019 from UX Collective: "UX is not only about the times when people are using our products, but also about the times when they are not." This is more important than ever as, according to this curated report, 33% of divorced couples cited Facebook as a cause of the dissolution of their marriage

I know that's a lot for a Saturday, but seriously, it's a mind-blowing read.

Beyoncรฉ Sued Over Website Accessibility, Job Candidates Who "Ghost" Are on the Rise, & Mistakes to Avoid When Building Buyer Personas ...This is THE LATEST!

The fact that I've carved out a career that's so focused on writing is a bit of a running joke in my family. I was a notoriously terrible student who hated all English or writing-focused classes.

One time in the eighth grade, I had to write an essay about the book Shane, and I was struggling to meet the 500-word minimum requirement. So, when I hit this sentence at approximately word 400 -- "Some might say the main character was mean." -- I had a positively brilliant idea

I pulled out my ratty thesaurus and proceeded to look up synonyms for "mean" and then padded the rest of the essay with sentences like, "Or that he was cold-hearted. Or maybe unkind. Perhaps loathsome. Even uncharitable. Possibly unpleasant. Or contemptible."

And on, and on, until I hit that minimum word count requirement.

As an insufferable, Leonardo DiCaprio-obsessed teen, I was so pleased with my cleverness. My English teacher, however, not so much.

In fact, I ended up having to write the entire essay all over again.

sad-leo

A live shot of me upon hearing this news, via GIPHY.

It was one of the most painful ways I've learned the importance doing something right the first time. (I wasn't allowed to watch TV at all until I had turned my assignment back in, because parents are the worst.)

Don't be like me. Understand that while sometimes you may be tempted to cut corners with your website, your marketing, or your hiring process for the sake of "efficiency," shortcuts have a nasty habit of backfiring.

๐Ÿ Beyoncรฉ Sued Over Website Accessibility & ADA Compliance Issues

Mary Connor is a visually impaired woman who wanted to purchase tickets to a Beyoncรฉ concert. Unfortunately, Queen B's website is almost exclusively visual in nature, lacking a number of legally required features by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Now, Mary is suing. She wants changes to be made, so the website is accessible, and she is seeking compensation for damages due to discrimination toward the blind. This lawsuit over Beyoncรฉ's website is yet another example of why ensuring your website is accessible is critically important

๐Ÿ‘ป Flaky Job Applicants Are on the Rise & Here's What We're Doing About It

At 3.7%, United States unemployment is the lowest it's been since 1968. While this is great news for job seekers, those seeking new talent -- particularly in the marketing field -- like our own VP of Services Brie Rangel, are struggling with an aggravating new trend. Job applicants who vanish into thin air during the hiring process. Even after they've been given or accepted an offer. ๐Ÿšซ 9 Ways Well-Meaning Marketers Get Their Buyer Personas Wrong

"I see bad buyer personas. They don't know they're bad. Walking around like regular buyer personas. They're everywhere." OK, that Sixth Sense throwback was awful, and I apologize. Still, when inbound strategies and campaigns fail, there's a good chance bad buyer personas are the root cause. From having too many personas, to missing out on the ever-important negative persona, IMPACT Director of Event Marketing Jen Barrell says these are the nine common mistakes you need to avoid when building your own buyer personas.

Marcus Sheridan on Inbound in 2019, GEICO's Genius Lead Generation Campaign, & Google Makes It Easier for Customers to Contact You ...This is THE LATEST!

I can't be trusted. Yet another house plant has died under my care.

I thought this time it would be different, you know?

"Hey, Liz. You're 36 years old. You've somehow managed to keep two dogs, a cat, and a husband alive for the past few years. Surely, you should be able to handle a little indoor house plant that doesn't require you to take them on walks or make them a salad because, 'Salads just taste better when you make them.'"

Wrong. It only took 13 days for my latest victim to succumb to my black thumb. As a friend once told me, "Liz, you're like hospice care for house plants -- you help them transition to the next chapter of this crazy thing we call life."

Sigh.

You know what isn't dead, at least? Inbound.

But as we kick-off 2019, we need to accept that many of the traditional, championed ways of achieving success with inbound just don't cut it anymore.

๐Ÿฅ‡ Marcus Sheridan Shares What It Takes to Succeed with Inbound Marketing in 2019 (Interview)

That's why IMPACT VP of Marketing Kathleen Booth invited Marcus to join her as her first Inbound Success guest of 2019 to discuss what it really takes to succeed with inbound marketing. ๐Ÿ‘‹ Google Is Making It Easier for Customers to Message Your Business with a New Test

Most marketers spend their days anxiously waiting to hear about the latest way Google is going to make their lives more difficult, if not completely miserable. Forbes Embraces Robots, Alexa Embraces Humans, & Basecamp Rejects Facebook ...This is THE LATEST!

Surprise! It's me, your friendly neighborhood IMPACT community director, Stephanie. I took over today's issue of THE LATEST, and boy, do I have a story for you. (Don't worry, Ramona and Liz will be back next week!)

I just left a grocery store, items in hand, without paying

Let me back up...

Earlier today, I was walking to my train when I spotted a warm orange glow from a formerly vacant storefront. When I realized what it was my feet immediately carried me inside.

It was an Amazon Go store!

Amazon Go Store

Taken while basking the glorious glow of Amazon automation.

If you haven't heard of this, it's Amazon's checkout-free store with ready-to-eat items you can grab and literally just go.

It was magical.โœจ

While today's rapid advancements in technology may seem scary, they can also be helpful timesavers. (According to the Amazon Go app, I was only in the store for a total of a minute and 20 seconds -- including the time it took to Instagram my experience!)

Maybe we need to start opening ourselves up to a future with robots... even for content creation.

๐Ÿค–  With "Bertie," Robots Are Writing Rough Drafts for Forbes Contributors

Yep, robots are creating content. We're not talking your run of the mill robot-generated Olive Garden commercial script, either. We're talking about the big leagues. The team at Forbes is currently testing an AI-driven tool that gives Forbes writers a rough draft to build upon, instead of having them start a new article from scratch. Now, IMPACT Director of Web & Interactive Content Liz Murphy wants her own content robot.

๐Ÿ—ฃ New Alexa Skill Leaves Robot Voices Behind by Having Real People Read the News to You

Remember in Anchorman when Ron Burgundy got tiffed about Veronica reading "his news" live on the air? That's how many people feel when they ask an Alexa device for a flash briefing and get a robotic voice reciting the latest headlines. (Not all robots get love this week.) IMPACT Controller Eric Choma introduces us to the all-new Noa Alexa Skill and what it's teaching marketers about reaching their audience.

๐Ÿšซ Basecamp Is Facebook-Free & They Want You to Do the Same

Following a long list of privacy issues and data breaches in 2018, Basecamp co-founder and CTO David Heinemeier Hansson published an article stating their intentions and reasoning behind becoming a โ€œFacebook-free business" in 2019. Director of Client Services Katie Pritchard shares the details of the story and why Basecamp wants you to join them in this article.

Did you know hashtags probably won't increase engagement on your Instagram posts?

According to a study by Mention of more than 115 million Instagram posts, 33.3% of Instagram posts contain no hashtags and using hashtags in Instagram posts does not increase engagement rates.

This could be because Instagram's algorithm favors paid ads for reach over organic discoverability -- or it could simply be because mountains of hashtags are distracting and spammy. I guess we just have to stick to valuable content.

7 Must-Have Content Apps, What Happens When a Leader Reads 52+ Books in a Year, & Bandersnatch Is a Glimpse at the Future of Content ...This is THE LATEST!

Guess who's back? Back again? Liz is back. Tell a friend! ๐ŸŽถ

There's a 90% chance I'll be whining like a petulant child at the size of my to-do list and begging for relief by this Friday at 5 p.m. -- but for right now, I am basking in the productive glow of my first day being back in the saddle at work after more than a week on holiday vacation.

Don't get me wrong, I love being on vacation.

However, during prolonged periods of rest and relaxation, I tend to become antsy, anxious for something productive to do. (My husband, Patrick, noted repeatedly that I could cure this by doing the dishes for once, but pfft. What does he know?)

That is why my mission today is to give you loads of stuff to do, in the form of new tools, a hefty dose of inspiration, and more than a few opportunities for you to be more productive and focused, as we dive headfirst into the start of 2019.

๐Ÿ’• I Would Go on Strike If I Had to Do My Job Without These 7 Content Marketing Tools & Apps

I know, it's another technology round-up post you didn't ask for. But I wouldn't be sharing this if I didn't genuinely believe that one, some, or all of these tools have the potential to radically transform how you manage and execute your content strategies. (For more than a few of these tools, I didn't realize how much needless suffering I was subjecting myself to until I tried them.) So, without further ado -- and in no particular order -- here are my absolute favorite content marketing apps that I couldn't live without.

๐Ÿ“š Chris Challenged Himself as a Leader to Read 52+ Books in a Year & Here's What Happened...

Before the start of 2018, IMPACT COO Chris Duprey asked himself a question: "I know growing as an inbound leader means I must be a proactive student of leadership -- always hungry for knowledge -- but what tough learning goal do I set for myself to make sure I am the inbound leadership student I need to be?" Given his lifelong love of reading, Chris decided in that moment that he would commit to reading 52 books in a single year. Read what he learned about leadership (and himself) during this journey, and what all inbound leaders should take away from his experience.

๐Ÿ“บ Interactive Netflix Movie Bandersnatch Is a Case Study About the Future of Content

The immersive, interactive experience presented by Bandersnatch on Netflix took social media by storm over the holidays. As the viewer, you follow Stefan, a young computer game programmer in 1984. Periodically, you are then prompted to choose between two different options that will change how the plot unfolds. When IMPACT Head of Editorial Content Ramona Sukhraj test-drove Bandersnatch for herself, she quickly realized what may have seemed like a gimmick at first is actually a sign for marketers of what the future holds for content creation.

Top Marketing Reads of 2018, Building Your 2019 LinkedIn Strategy, & It's the Era of Robot Disruption ...This is THE LATEST!

We did it, everybody! We made it to 2019! ๐Ÿฅ‚

Of course, you know what that means. It's time to put down the pie forks, put on our adult pants, and start chipping away at the goals and resolutions we set for ourselves for the coming year.

(I know it's a bummer. Pie is absolutely delicious.)

As for me, I'm off to a pretty solid start for 2019, if I do say so myself. (And I do.) I cleaned out Pumpkin's litter box this morning like Totally Responsible Adultโ„ขand I put on gym clothes for a date I have with a treadmill later on today.

I want to make sure you're prepared for 2019, too. So, here are three articles that will help you reflect on last year, make plans for the year ahead, and better understand what's coming down the road in 2020 and beyond.

Of those, here are the 17 most-viewed articles from 2019, covering everything from Google Ads and chatbots, to video marketing and podcasting.

๐Ÿ”ฅ 6 Expert Tips for Your 2019 LinkedIn Strategy

Poor, LinkedIn. Even though it's a powerful social media platform for lead generation, it's considered by many to be a "necessary evil." Does that sound like you? If so, you need to make a New Year's resolution to embrace LinkedIn. Lucky for you, IMPACT Director of Audience Engagement and Community Stephanie Baiocchi wrote this article, so you can learn the six core pillars of our LinkedIn marketing strategy for 2019.

๐Ÿค– Welcome to a New Era of Disruption... & Robots (Infographic)

As marketers, we need to be honest with ourselves -- we've abused the word "disruption," to the point where it's lost much of its meaning. But our misuse of the word doesn't change the fact that brands -- and the marketers behind them -- are entering an unprecedented era of technological disruption. For example, it's predicted that by 2029, computers will have human-levels of intelligence. Learn more about the rise of the machines, where AI is going, and what the future holds in this infographic.
