A Racist Attack Over Email, Inbound Leadership Hurdles, & Eating Crow About WIX.com... This Is THE LATEST!

Marketers just love to talk about how important it is to be "authentic." 

But how many of us are actually doing it?

How many of us sit down at our keyboards or in front of a video camera and get real and honest with our audiences about what hurts us or scares us? About when things go wrong, or when it turns out we're the ones in the wrong?

If I'm being "authentic" right now with you all, I don't do this. I cushion the blow of my failures in humorous anecdotes and schtick. I deflect criticism with pointed sarcasm. I also have a very hard time being wrong publicly, so I get defensive. 

All of us can learn a lot about what real authenticity looks like from the following three articles. In their own way, they each show that sometimes in order to teach the most important lessons or answer the most pressing questions in our content, we must be willing to expose our vulnerabilities.

This week, I tried a candlelit yoga class offered here in the gym of IMPACT HQ's new office building.

This week, comedian Conan O'Brien returned to late night with a reformatted, 30-minute long version of his beloved talk show. His first guest was actor Tom Hanks and he spoke in detail about his habit of posting photos of lost gloves, shoes, and other belongings in weird places on Instagram.

Saying this was a busy week at IMPACT is a understatement.

As Liz mentioned, our entire marketing team as well as several of our supervisors were in-office in New Haven for training, meetings, and video shoots, and, as always, it was exhaustingly awesome.

Expert Facebook Ads Tips for 2019, Our New Ultimate Guide to Video for Sales, & Real-Time Testing of Featured Snippets ...This is THE LATEST!

Beyoncรฉ Sued Over Website Accessibility, Job Candidates Who "Ghost" Are on the Rise, & Mistakes to Avoid When Building Buyer Personas ...This is THE LATEST!

The fact that I've carved out a career that's so focused on writing is a bit of a running joke in my family. I was a notoriously terrible student who hated all English or writing-focused classes. 

One time in the eighth grade, I had to write an essay about the book Shane, and I was struggling to meet the 500-word minimum requirement. So, when I hit this sentence at approximately word 400 -- "Some might say the main character was mean." -- I had a positively brilliant idea

I pulled out my ratty thesaurus and proceeded to look up synonyms for "mean" and then padded the rest of the essay with sentences like, "Or that he was cold-hearted. Or maybe unkind. Perhaps loathsome. Even uncharitable. Possibly unpleasant. Or contemptible."

And on, and on, until I hit that minimum word count requirement.

As an insufferable, Leonardo DiCaprio-obsessed teen, I was so pleased with my cleverness. My English teacher, however, not so much. 

In fact, I ended up having to write the entire essay all over again.

It was one of the most painful ways I've learned the importance doing something right the first time. (I wasn't allowed to watch TV at all until I had turned my assignment back in, because parents are the worst.)

Don't be like me. Understand that while sometimes you may be tempted to cut corners with your website, your marketing, or your hiring process for the sake of "efficiency," shortcuts have a nasty habit of backfiring.

Marcus Sheridan on Inbound in 2019, GEICO's Genius Lead Generation Campaign, & Google Makes It Easier for Customers to Contact You ...This is THE LATEST!

I can't be trusted. Yet another house plant has died under my care. 

I thought this time it would be different, you know?

"Hey, Liz. You're 36 years old. You've somehow managed to keep two dogs, a cat, and a husband alive for the past few years. Surely, you should be able to handle a little indoor house plant that doesn't require you to take them on walks or make them a salad because, 'Salads just taste better when you make them.'"

Wrong. It only took 13 days for my latest victim to succumb to my black thumb. As a friend once told me, "Liz, you're like hospice care for house plants -- you help them transition to the next chapter of this crazy thing we call life."

Sigh.  

You know what isn't dead, at least? Inbound.

But as we kick-off 2019, we need to accept that many of the traditional, championed ways of achieving success with inbound just don't cut it anymore.

Forbes Embraces Robots, Alexa Embraces Humans, & Basecamp Rejects Facebook ...This is THE LATEST!

Let me back up...

Earlier today, I was walking to my train when I spotted a warm orange glow from a formerly vacant storefront. When I realized what it was my feet immediately carried me inside. 

It was an Amazon Go store!

If you haven't heard of this, it's Amazon's checkout-free store with ready-to-eat items you can grab and literally just go. 

It was magical.โœจ

While today's rapid advancements in technology may seem scary, they can also be helpful timesavers. (According to the Amazon Go app, I was only in the store for a total of a minute and 20 seconds -- including the time it took to Instagram my experience!) 

Maybe we need to start opening ourselves up to a future with robots... even for content creation.

Did you know hashtags probably won't increase engagement on your Instagram posts?

According to a study by Mention of more than 115 million Instagram posts, 33.3% of Instagram posts contain no hashtags and using hashtags in Instagram posts does not increase engagement rates. 

This could be because Instagram's algorithm favors paid ads for reach over organic discoverability -- or it could simply be because mountains of hashtags are distracting and spammy. I guess we just have to stick to valuable content.
