"You're a Woman in a New Leadership Role...Now What?" (MarketHer Ep. 6)

"You're a Woman in a New Leadership Role...Now What?" (MarketHer Ep. 6)

Are you a woman in a new leadership role experiencing challenges?

Well, step right up, because we have a few stories for you!

As of this quarter, I have officially transitioned into IMPACT’s Director of Client Services.

For those of you not ingrained in our organizational chart, what that means is I went from a client-facing, mentor-type role on a specific team to now leading a department that includes every single person that touches client work.

If I think about it too much, it can feel pretty scary.

And that’s what we got into on this week’s episode of MarketHer.

When it comes to leadership, what scares us? What are we focusing on improving, and what are the takeaways you can start implementing today if you're experiencing these things too?

Going into a new role is challenging enough, but add management responsibilities on top and there are a lot of fears that can severely mess up your transition if you let them get to you.

Now, I’m not the only one moving into a management role in the MarketHer gang.

Britt and Angela are moving into the same function but on different teams. Although they share the same path to management, they each have their own set of challenges they’re working through.

In this episode, we talk through what each of us is facing and lay out some steps each of us is working on to conquer our fears/improve our capabilities.

Between the three of us, I'm sure you can definitely find something to relate to, get some good tips, and be on your way to killing it in your new leadership position!

Here’s the skinny on what we each discuss:

Me: I’m a fairly naturally bossy person but suppressed those tendencies my whole life (except towards my sweet husband :) ) due to social norms and what not. No one likes a bossy kid. So, how do you bring out your natural ways without being labeled "bitchy" or in my case, still being "too nice?"

Britt: She's moved into a management position where she now has to coach a team versus doing the work herself. In being a "pit bull" for her clients, she's now learning how to work through her team and open herself up to her team. She wrote a bit about her transition in this article

Angela: She also moved into a management position after being peers and friends with her team for the past year. She hates the feeling of someone not liking her or being left out, but she's learning how to make that transition and set boundaries with her team.

If you’re new to your role, or ever have been and have some great advice to share, please do so in the comments!

Angela Myrtetus

500px_Square_Angela_Myrtetus.jpg"I’m a Senior Strategist here at IMPACT. I’m a mom of three and the wife to a radio personality here in Philly. While both our jobs can be demanding, we love our careers in the creative industry. Balancing all that with three kids, however, is why I’m doing this show.

I still have things to learn, but also have things to share on how I’ve figured it out thus far. My vision for this show is to create a safe place for everyone, especially women, to share their challenges and successes on balancing work life. We all don’t do it perfectly, but you may have a gem of a tip that will save someone’s life - literally and figuratively."

500px_Square_Brie_Rangel.jpg"Hi everyone! I’m the Director of Client Services here at IMPACT in my day job, and wife and dog mom every other minute of the day. This show is important to me because as I’ve grown in my career, I’ve realized there really are unique challenges women face and not a ton of resources (other than generic self-help) to help us figure it all out. I want this show to be an outlet for anyone who experiences those challenges so they can relate and hopefully learn new strategies and tactics for how to deal.

My long-term vision would be for us to build a community of strong men and women who can help change the social norms that put us in these challenges the first place. But first things first, check out our first episode :)"

Britt Schwartz

500px_Square_Britt_Schwartz.jpg"Hi, there! I’m Britt Schwartz, a 30-ish homeschooling mom of 5 and a Senior Strategist at IMPACT. My life isn’t conventional and I wouldn’t have it any other way!

MarketHer is something I’m extremely passionate about because throughout my career in creative agencies and in client-facing roles, I’ve experienced situations and challenges that I wish I would have a place to turn to that would have made me feel not alone and to find real solutions."

P.S.

Are you liking the show? Any suggestions or feedback you care to share? Let us also know that in the comments! Thanks for watching!
