7 Inbound Marketing Lessons Learned from the Pop Charts
Have you ever asked yourself what Kesha – excuse me – ...what Ke$ha would do when it comes to executing your inbound marketing campaign?
Yeah, me either. However, there's actually a lot we can learn from the pop charts when it comes to our inbound marketing campaigns. I mean, look at it this way. These pop stars were once young, unknown kids just trying to break through. With a little perseverance and hard work, they're now polluting – excuse me – populating our radio stations and working their way into our subconscious every day.
Sarcasm aside, there's certainly a parallel to be drawn here.
And then there's guys like Bieber, who was once a newborn, and fought his way through several long, trying months of being a toddler before he became a star. The lessons are all around us!
So I've decided to take seven chart toppers from recent years, and relate them to your inbound marketing campaign and what they can tell you about it.

7 Chart Toppers & What They Can Tell You About Your Inbound Marketing
1. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) – Beyoncé
Key Lyric: "If you liked it than you shoulda put a ring on it. Don't be mad once you see that he want it."
I totally get what Beyoncé is saying here. If you're not engaging effectively with your users on social media sites like Facebook, don't be surprised once you find out that they're running over to your competitors for the treatment they're looking for.
If they "like" you, than commit yourself to them and start engaging them with great, resourceful content in order to get them coming back to your website and converting on some of your offers.
If you're not effectively engaging your social media following, don't be surprised (or mad) once you see that your competitors want there valuable attention.
2. Oops!...I Did it Again – Britney Spears
Key Lyric: "I think I did it again. I made you believe...we're more than just friends. Oh baby, it might seem like a crush, but it doesn't mean that I'm serious."
Britney gets it. I mean, she just really gets it.
Members of your sales team are pulling their hair out due to all this wasted time on the phone with unqualified leads. I mean, they're frustrated And who could blame them? Your leads are.....umm....leading them on!
In order to ease the tension between your marketing and sales teams, start practicing more effective lead nurturing practices in order to get more high-quality, sales-ready leads moving down the funnel and to the phone with your sales team.
If a lead isn't that serious, than they should never waste the time and resources of your sales team.

3. SexyBack – Justin Timberlake
Key Lyric: "I'm bringin' sexy back. Them other boys don't know how to act."
Clearly our boy JT is talking about repurposing some of your older marketing content.
Some of your older, more popular blog posts would make a great ebook collection. Especially once time has rendered some of those posts hard to find.
Or how about breaking down some of your ebooks into excerpts for your blog? This is an effective way of driving even more people to your landing pages. Just because something is old or outdated, doesn't mean that it can't be easily updated and brought back to be more popular than ever.
4. 99 Problems – Jay-Z
Key Lyric: "If you're having ____ problems I feel bad for you son. I've got 99 problems but a ____ ain't one."
The reason I left the blanks here is simple. This is your company's specific selling point when you're engaging with potential prospects.
What are their needs and challenges? And more importantly, how can you help them overcome these? After all, you're an expert in the field. You may have countless other issues and stress points throughout the day, but this isn't one of them. This is your specialty.
People like working with industry experts. So do your best to set yourself aside as one through your marketing content and social engagement.
5. Milkshake – Kelis
Key Lyric: "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. They're like...it's better than yours."
Apparently Kelis has some great marketing offers that she's proud of.
This is how you should be feeling about your ebooks, whitepapers, or webinars. Offer your prospects and followers something of great value that they cannot get anywhere else, and you'll start bringing all the leads to "the yard."

6. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift
Key Lyric: "You go talk to your friends, talk to my friends, talk to me. But we-eeee are never ever ever ever...getting back together."
Taylor Swift isn't happy with your email marketing. In fact, she's unsubscribed, and she sounds pretty serious about never re-engaging with your brand.
In order to avoid this in the future, it's critical that you focus on executing a more targeted email marketing campaign. Gone are the days of email blasts to your entire contact list. Start segmenting your emails so that your recipients are only receiving content and information that's relevant to their behavior and what you know about them.
