Unless you are living in the Stone Age, it is apparent that social media has a huge impact in people’s personal and professional lives. Specifically, Twitter currently has over 500 million accounts and over 350 million tweets go out per day.

So, who is the typical twitter user? The answer is an English-speaking woman, age 28, with 208 followers, an iPhone…and a strong preference for the color purple.  A recent study done by analytics firm Beevolve provides further fun facts about the average Twitter user.

Gender Demographics

Overall, women outnumber men in the Twitter world.  53% of twitter users are female while 47% are males.  Although women may outnumber men, there are several other significant differences between male and female Twitter preferences.

  • 64% of women have protected accounts and only 36% of males do
  • Purple is the most common background color used by females (22.1%), the least common color used by men
  • The average number of tweets by males is 567 and the average number of tweets by females is 610
  • Women prefer to talk about family and fashion while men prefer to tweet about technology, sports and entrepreneurship

Apple vs. Android

Twitter applications on mobile devices have made the use of Twitter even more accessible.  Although Android has more market share than iOS globally, 68.9% of Smartphone/Tablet users use Apple devices to send their tweets compared to the 31.1% of people that use Android devices. Apple wins, once again.
