If you’re a talented professional writer or a novice just getting started you could be plagued with writers block, the inability to proceed with an assignment or create a new piece of writing. The reasons for writers block vary, from fear and anxiety to busy schedules and personal lives, but here are a few tips you can use to avoid writers block and get back to some serious and productive writing.
• Adhere to a strict writing schedule – schedule a specific time to write and adhere to it, force yourself to write at a set time and don’t put it off.
• Set deadlines and keep them – if a piece of writing is due at a certain time, make sure you adhere to the deadline; if you don’t have a specific assignment you create a personal deadline that will spur you on.
• Examine the issues behind your writers block – think about your situation and what you can do about it and talk to a friend, preferably a fellow writer who shares your concerns.
• Alter the piece of writing you’re working on – if you’re having trouble starting a piece of writing, write the middle of the piece first and work your way back to the start.
• Don’t expect everything you write to be perfect – get it down and go back and edit later.
• Get plenty of rest, eat nutritious meals and exercise so you can think clearly and start writing.
