It’s that time of year again when we all try to get rid the useless rubbish that we have laying around our homes – and around our social media accounts. Take some time this month to go through your entire social media marketing campaign and toss out anything that you no longer need or find relevant to your campaign. Start with Twitter
Twitter is definitely the #1 place where most businesses need to do a bit of cleaning. When Twitter first came out, everyone – including companies and businesses – just wanted to be popular. Everyone wanted to have as many followers as possible because, well, didn’t that mean that they would get more leads and traffic?
Not necessarily. Turns out that tactics like that really just turned your Twitter into a mass marketing campaign (and we all know how unsuccessful those usually are). Chris Brogan recently deleted all of his Twitter followers and decided to start from scratch. Now, I’m not suggesting that you make such drastic measures, but you may want to download a tool like “Just Unfollow” or “FriendorFollow”.
These tools will help you delete anyone who you follow but who doesn’t follow you back, and select those who you want keep around. These tools may set you back a few bucks, but the cleanup is well worth it.
Move on to Facebook
Your Facebook account probably doesn’t require as much of a de-cluttering of friends, but with the implementation of Facebook “Timeline”, you will want to do a bit of cleanup – especially for your own personal account, and especially if that personal account has any business acquaintances, customers, or leads on it. Some things you should consider removing or blocking include:
- Any photos that show you drinking alcohol or around people under the influence.
- Any photos that may show you making rude gestures.
- Any images that show you partaking in illegal activities.
- Unsubscribe from groups that show any sort of bias or bigotry (even if the page was created to be ironic), and unsubscribe from any that promote illegal activities.
- Remove any of your personal contact information.
Here’s what you should be including on your Facebook page:
- A clean, professional-looking profile picture.
- Images that show you doing constructive things, like reading to your children or working on a car.
- Include any appropriate travel images.
- Post pictures of you with your friends in positive situations.
- Join groups that are positive (cancer awareness, anti-war, etc.)
Other Social Media Sites
The same sort of measures should be used for your other social media sites, like LinkedIn and Google+. Go through your friend lists and your list of business acquaintances. Think about:
- Who influences you?
- Who engages in conversation?
- Who is in the same or similar niche as you (and who is in a completely different niche)?
- What benefit does this contact bring?
Remove anyone who doesn’t fill any of those categories. One word of caution: don’t be too quick to remove anyone from your LinkedIn profile. Make sure that you visit their own profile and try to think about how they could be a beneficial business connection. Perhaps you are a business owner who connected with a blogger a couple of a year’s ago. Instead of deleting them, consider whether you want them to perhaps guest blog for you, if you want to ask them to create a sponsored blog, or you can even hire them on to blog for you if you go away on vacation.
- Take the time to cleanup your Twitter following, using tools that can delete people who don’t follow you back.
- Be sure to keep your Facebook profile free of any unprofessional pictures.
- Rather than focus on how many people you have on your social media sites during this spring cleanup, think about the value that they bring to you and your business.
