One of the largest detractors of having a Facebook account is the idea that everyone and their friends (and sometimes individuals that aren’t their friends or yours) have consistent access to your personal and professional happenings. Yes, the Facebook team has evolved and accommodated its users by creating custom controls, but they have just recently stepped up their game significantly with their security features. Now there is virtually no reason for you to not have a Facebook account other than the fact that you don’t want to promote your business across the largest social network on the planet.
With all of that said, let’s take a quick (but detailed) glance at the updates that will improve and personalize your Facebook experience:
- Groups — This feature was released around October 6th, and is one of the most significant features that Facebook currently provides. Prior to the release of Groups, if you posted a photo you were basically sharing it with either your “Friends” or “Everyone”, but now you have the opportunity to define smaller groups of friends and specify which friends can view your a full spectrum of your content. Along with this, when an update is sent from one member of the group, the entire group is sent a notification which maintains a much closer tab for everything you want to share. This is truly an awesome feature for business owners, managers, and anyone else who is operating an account for personal as well as professional purposes.
- Security Updates — With the concern of people hacking into others’ Facebook accounts, the FB team has set forth to rectify any doubts of security with implementing regular prompts to update their security information. This not only helps you remind yourself to maintain your information, but this is also an aid for individuals to alter their security information if they would like to change things up every once in a while.
- Remote Sign-Out — With the next generation of Facebook users getting a little older, it was important for the Facebook team to include a remote feature to log out of their account remotely. This is geared toward users who log on from other people’s phones or computers and forget to sign out of their account. With this new feature, you can get into your account, view previous account sessions and discover if there is a session still open (and therefore end that particular session).
- One-Time Passwords — If you do, in fact, utilize other devices or computers to access Facebook, this is an absolute required feature to use (in my humble opinion). By texting “otp” to 32665 you will immediately receive a one-time use password for your account that expires in 20 minutes after being issued. The only caveat with this feature is that you have to include your mobile number on your account (not necessarily display it to anyone). According to the Facebook blog, this is being released gradually unlike the other features which are available to everyone right now.
Overall, Facebook is getting smarter, safer, and exponentially larger each and every day. It is to the point where a Facebook account is almost a necessity for businesses, their managers/owners, and key individuals associated with the company. As always, feel free to leave a comment below if you need help or have questions with your Facebook account or if you’d like to explore the idea of having IMPACT manage a social media mix to promote your business.
