One of the industries that I see benefiting the most from having a blog are insurance agencies. What a lot of insurance agencies don’t realize is that insurance is almost like a foreign language to most folks. For instance, though we know we “need” travel insurance if we’re going abroad, do any of us really read the fine print to see what’s covered and what’s not?
If you’re an insurance agency that wants to make a big splash on the scene and generate more leads, then one of the best ways for you to do this is through a blog. A blog can benefit insurance agencies in a number of ways, such as:
- Having a blog will help set you apart form the other insurance agencies in your area.
- A blog will make you more human rather than “just another insurance agency down the block”
- It will help get more online traffic to your site, and therefore more business
Wondering what an insurance agency could possibly blog about? I’ll start with my personal favorite first.

Explain Policies
People hate going through fine print and fumbling through unfamiliar jargon when reading insurance policies. If you want to get some business, than choose a policy for every few blogs and make it a goal to explain that policy in the most simplistic terms possible. Explain what’s covered and what’s not. Explain what additional coverage could help supplement the current coverage, and when someone may need it. By explaining things and making it easy for the customer, you’re bound to gain business.
When starting your blog, begin with some of the most popular insurance choices, like home, auto, and travel insurance. Explain why and who may need which type, and in what circumstances. Then branch out to more vague insurance policies, or perhaps mention one of your favorite types of insurance that hardly anyone knows about. Have a “pet” week and dedicate your blog to pet insurance, pet travel safety, and so on. The possibilities are endless.
Insurance in the News
Every once in a while there will be a breaking story about something insurance-policy related, such as a pregnant Australian woman who bought travel health insurance and gave birth to her baby abroad, but her health insurance didn’t cover the cost of a birth in a foreign country. These are things that you can either use to:
- Create curated content (i.e. take the news story and make it into your own words); or
- Use to comment and give your opinion on. What should the insurance agent she went to have said to ensure she was properly covered? What would you, a professional and competent insurance agent, have done if you sold a pregnant woman traveling to a different country?
Share your Experiences
Undoubtedly you have had some interesting experiences while working in the insurance industry. Talk about some of your best customers, some of your most difficult customers, and how both taught you different lessons on how to become a better insurance agent. Tell people why you got into insurance in the first place and what drives you to serve people in this manner day after day. The more people get to know you, the more they’re bound to like you and see you as a person that they want to buy from rather than some anonymous agent who’s just out to pocket their money.
Share Different Media
Blogs don’t have to be all about text; they should also be about sharing information through different media channels! If you’ve seen a funny video that’s related to insurance, then by all means post it! If you’ve found a video where someone is upset about their insurance coverage, why not post a “response” video and post it both to your blog and to another video channel (like YouTube)?
Having different media on your blog is important. While text is all well and good, having different types of media on your blog will draw more people to it. Some people prefer video over text. Others prefer pictures over video. Offer a variety of things to people and they’ll undoubtedly come back to check in on you.
Key Takeaways:
The goal of a good insurance agent’s blog is to educate their clients through a number of different channels. By doing this, you become more than just an insurance agent; you become “you”, someone that the public wants to do business with. Insurance is quite vital in a number of ways, and having the trust of your customers and clients is of the utmost importance if you want to succeed in the business.
