Skype, the software program introduced in Luxembourg in 2003, is an international phenomenon that allows users to make video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Much of the service is free, with low costs available for calling land lines and mobiles.
To start using Skype you can download the Skype homepage. Then fill out the Skype profile. You can add contacts to your account, using their Skype name or email address and you can click on the Skype tool bar to find Skype names. Click on the green call button to launch an Internet call and the red button when the calls completed. You can also make conference calls by clicking the conference button at the top of the pop up window.
You can import contact lists from Outlook and other places into Skype which will make it easier to reach your friends. Skype also offers a dial pad to dial numbers. You can also send files to other Skype users by clicking the Send File icon, with a number of options for selecting the file you want to send and the names you want to send it to. Theres also a status option that notifies your contacts if youre available to receive calls.
Skype Internet calls are free and there are low cost computer to phone (Skype Out) and phone to computer (Skype In) calls.
